If you need braces, then you’re probably wondering what options you have for cosmetic braces now. Compared to traditional braces, dentists now have a few options that look better and fit better and take less time to correct issues with teeth. You can speak with our dentist to consult about what type of braces are suitable for your unique situation.
Traditional braces versus clear and invisible braces
One of the reasons that many people are looking for different types of braces for themselves and their children is because traditional braces have some unappealing features. To help you decide if cosmetic braces are right with you, we’ll compare some of the differences between metal braces and clear and invisible braces.
Metal braces are more visible
The one thing that most everybody knows about traditional metal braces is that they involve a lot of highly visible metalwork. One of the largest problems that teens and adults who get traditional braces have is that they involve so much metal that it is unattractive and difficult to wear.
Metal braces sometimes include more than just the brackets and wires that fit around the teeth; they may even have attachments and headgear that make the braces even more offensive to wear.
Clear and invisible braces, on the other hand, are just like they sound. There are now several options for braces that are either completely invisible or barely noticeable when you smile, which makes the stress of wearing them in public much easier. Adolescents prefer invisible braces to traditional ones because they can still interact naturally with people wearing metal braces.
Metal braces can be painful
Another complaint many patients have about traditional metal braces is that they can be quite painful to wear and even more so when they need to be adjusted. The pain can be enough to make it difficult to eat or talk. This is often a deterrent to getting braces in the first place, combined with the length of time it takes for the braces to work.
Invisible aligners are much more comfortable to wear because each set is customized for the patient, minimizing personal discomfort. Additionally, trays are changed out every two weeks so that even if one tray is a bad fit, they aren’t difficult to adjust or wait until the trays are swapped.
The trays must also be removed when eating, which makes enjoying your favorite foods much easier than traditional metal braces. Invisible aligners can typically be removed for up to two hours a day if appropriately worn and cleaned regularly.
Metal braces take long
Among all the different options for cosmetic braces, metal braces are typically the most effective for severe conditions. Still, they also take the longest to work out of all the different options, meaning a major commitment to time spent wearing them.
Clear braces and aligners are typically great at handling mild to moderate correction and take up to half as much time in some cases to work.
